AbstractRemote sensing has been used extensively to identify and quantify forest area reduction in the tropics. However, it has proven insufficient for determining precisely how much forest remains. It is critical to know the state or condition of this remaining forest, i.e., the extent to which this forest is structurally mature. Certain initiatives improved monitoring through diagnosing tropical forests. Could forest condition be estimated from space? The aim of this paper is twofold. The first goal is to review these initiatives, explaining the remote sensing techniques used. Most studies analyzed the relationships of structural features of forests to vegetation indices and radiance measurements in spectral bands related to vegetation, mainly using images acquired by Landsat series. The second goal is to discuss how forest conditions can be assessed through these techniques. The most popular vegetation index is the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). However, NDVI sensitivity is reduced over dense canopies, which may constrain its usage in dense tropical forests. Then other vegetation indices have been proposed to be more suitable for dense tropical forests. This saturation matter in vegetation indices and the transferability of relationships between biophysical characteristics and vegetation indices to other sites and times will be discussed.
